The History of the Ford Bronco | Orlando, FL

Sunstateford Fordbroncohistory 1920x400

After years of speculation and patiently waiting, the Ford Bronco has at long last returned. The original American icon of off-roading is back and it’s greater than ever before. Before you check out the all-new 2021 Ford Bronco, available next spring at Sun State Ford, you can read up on the history of a true legend of adventure.

First Generation (1966-1977)

The legendary Ford Bronco was Built Wildâ„¢ right from the beginning. It made its debut way back in 1966 with three versatile models: the Bronco Roadster, Bronco Sport Utility, and Bronco Wagon.

The Roadster was a topless, doorless model that introduced the Bronco’s iconic fold-down windshield, while the Sport Utility featured a truck-like tailgate and a lightweight removable top that let drivers feel the sun on their skin and the wind in their hair. Last but not least, the Wagon was a family-friendly adventure machine that boasted a full-length removable top and a rear tailgate that could fold down to accommodate extra-long cargo.

The Bronco’s rugged good looks and adventure-enabling capabilities made this 4×4 a smash hit with outdoor enthusiasts and off-road racers alike. The Bronco quickly proved its mettle by racking up off-road racing victories left and right thanks to its agile short wheelbase, tight turning diameter, and advanced coil-spring suspension system.

Second Generation (1978-1979)

The second-generation Ford Bronco was bigger and better than ever. Built upon a larger platform and sharing components with the perennially popular F-Series of trucks, these burly Broncos were engineered to tackle the toughest trails. But the second-generation Bronco had more to offer than off-road-ready capability — it united power, handsome good looks, and upscale luxury.

The gen-two Bronco boasted an available automatic transmission, five radio options, and your choice of a part-time and full-time 4×4 system. And to top it off, the Bronco offered iconic 1970s-era styling with its two-tone exterior, cut-pile carpeting, and wood-trim-accented cabin.

Third Generation (1980-1986)

With the advent of its third generation, the Bronco took a massive leap towards luxury and comfort, all while staying true to its adventure-ready roots. This built-for-adventure SUV gained an independent front suspension system that provided a smooth ride without compromising its durable design and impressive capabilities.

The new Bronco even received a boost in fuel economy thanks to its fresh, aerodynamic design, a four-speed automatic transmission, and a fuel-injected engine. But those weren’t the only innovations the third-gen Bronco had to offer — for the first time in its history, it boasted a tachometer, a CB radio, auto-front-locking hubs, and power windows.

Fourth Generation (1987-1991)

Generation four brought the Bronco a sculpted new look and stylish special editions. The exclusive Nite Edition Bronco boasted a blacked-out exterior accented by an oh-so-retro splash of neon color. If your Nite Edition Bronco donned an Azalea Pink stripe, its cabin sported eye-catching Scarlet upholstery. Nite Edition Broncos with an Aegean Blue decal boasted interiors clad in Dark Charcoal and Crystal Blue.

In 1991, the Bronco celebrated its 25th birthday with the Silver Anniversary edition. This dignified SUV sported a Currant Red paint job, exclusive accessories, and the model’s first-ever leather interior. But the biggest gen-four innovations were under the hood. The 1988 model gained a five-speed manual transmission, a brand-new Borg Warner 1345 transfer case, and anti-lock braking technology.

Fifth Generation (1992-1996)

This fan-favorite generation boasts a streamlined redesign and a wealth of exciting exterior color combinations. The gen-five Bronco boasted additional safety technology, four-wheel anti-lock brakes, and plenty of interior luxuries that were perfect for drivers with an active lifestyle. These included a premium speaker system, a revamped instrument cluster, optional leather seats and available power lumbar support.

The new XLT Sport model gave the Bronco a body-colored grille, cab steps, and bumpers for a sleek, monochrome design. And while the Bronco was made for adventure, it proved itself as a valuable workhorse — it was the vehicle of choice for the United States Forest Service.

Current Generation (2021)

While it seemed like the Bronco had ridden off into the sunset with its fifth generation, the iconic 4×4 made its triumphant return for the 2021 model year. The new chapter in the Bronco’s legacy brings cutting-edge styling, modern technology, and plenty of adventure-ready innovations. With eight available G.O.A.T. Modes™, an available segment-first 10-speed automatic transmission, removable doors, and a removable roof, the 2021 Ford Bronco is truly Built Wild™.

To help you conquer the most rugged terrain, the latest Bronco boasts two powertrains with best-in-class power and available Advanced 4×4 with automatic on-demand engagement. Whether you’re cruising through Orlando, Florida or hitting the off-road trails, the 2021 Bronco is the perfect companion for your next adventure.
